Imaging Cameras
In the early days, images were acquired with an Olympus OM-1 SLR camera and various high-speed films. Most of these films suffered from the effects of reciprocity failure. To overcome this limitation, experiments with plug-type cold cameras began, but getting and handling dry-ice became bothersome.
In 1999, a Meade 216 XT CCD camera was obtained, and so began the digital imaging journey. While it is not longer manufactured, the 216 XT proved to be a good platform to learn digital imaging and processing.
Beginning in 2007, the 216 XT was devoted to guiding the main telescope by attaching the 216 to the ETX, which serves as the guide scope, and mounting the package on the main telescope "piggyback-style". The ETX sits in two custom mounting rings so that adjustments can be be made to acquire and centre a suitable guidestar. Long-exposures are acquired with a Meade Deep-Sky Imager Pro II through the main telescope.
